Being Nervous And Afraid

There is a lot of literature on anxiety and fear and the differences between the two. In short, fear is an emotional response to an explicit threat, such as for example an agressive dog coming at you. Anxiety is a diffuse, nagging and disturbing feeling without an explicit threat. Anxiety feels as if you are scared and nervous and don’t know why. It’s as if you are under immense stress without any specific reason to pinpoint as the cause and it’s extremely difficult to fight off your natural response of fight or flight. It’s as if you are afraid of all and nothing.

Not all people who feel nervous and scared suffer from an anxiety disorder and panic attacks, but we all have experienced these emotions and suffered the consequences. Fear is a basic emotion, universal to everyone in the world and it’s often influencing us, sometimes without us knowing. In fact, this Inner No does not only influence us, it affects us negatively and in sneaky ways. It determines how we feel about ourselves and it has definitely impact on our behavior. Anxiety gets you to do and think things you don’t want and it can get you to leave things you wish to do.

Some examples from coachees at TUS:

“I have this inner mechanism that whenever I am happy, I tend to destroy that happiness. If I am in love with someone, I will for example do all in my power to destroy that relationship, which I don’t even want myself. I feel like I am afraid of being happy”

“If there is a business meeting with many people planned, I freeze up days before. By the time I arrive at for example a training session, I am afraid to say anything. I am highly capable to add to the discussion, but my fear prevents me from expressing my opinions and showing my talents”

Anxiety truly robs us from our pleasure and happiness in life and can keep us, our Ultimate Self, hostage for a long while.

Anxiety, although for some part anchored in our genetic make-up, can be effectively managed. If you like to beat anxiety, because it’s disrupting your life, contact (T)US.

Note that TUS does not treat anxiety disorders! Please consult your physician, a counselor or therapist when you are dealing or suspect you are dealing with anxiety disorder!
