Coaching, Mentoring, Consulting and Training (1)

Mentors usually reside within the same organisation as the person being mentored. The mentor is a more experienced employee, preferably not the manager, with a similar professional background, who teaches the employees “the ropes” in the company. The role of a mentor can be described as a guide in the company. A mentor’s main responsibility is to support performance and career development of his or her protege by providing guidance, explaining the dynamics in the organisation, giving career advice and opening doors. The mentor’s main responsibility is to the organisation, ensuring talents are properly guided in the organisation. The mentor-protege relationship is a one-on-one relationship. Mentor and protege meet regularly and discuss issues the protege brings up regarding current and future work issues and career perspectives. A mentor also provides sponsorship and support of his protege within the organisation. During the mentoring process, a mentor uses coaching skills, but there are major differences between a mentor and coach.

Coaches are more often than not external to the organisation and their main responsibility is towards the coachee. A coach unlocks the potential of the coachee, helping the coachee shift in view and outlook on life and career (and talents!) to open up new opportunities and increase options. A coach can address certain life-areas, such as work, career or relationships and helps the coachee working towards a goal, which is most of the time to increase personal and/or professional effectiveness. A coach helps identifying what is really important to you and how to get to where you want to be—or who you want to be. Coaching helps you immensely in focusing on your goals, since, sooner or later, we all tend to forget about our resolutions. A coach will also challenge you, confront you when you are not living up to your own commitments, helping you stick to your plan. A coach is a confidant, non-judgmental and compassionate about you. A coach helps you grow, personally and professionally.
