We Are Vulnerable To Many Influences

Some time ago, I spoke with someone who got verbally attacked by a person and she was truly upset by it all. I totally understood she was emotionally upset, most of us would be, and again it hit me: most of us are so vulnerable! We can have thousands of friends, but if someone says something nasty to us, even if we don't know that person - most of us get out of balance.

In fact, we are vulnerable to many influences. Commercials get to us (making us buy things we don’t want, need or can afford). Our upbringing gets to us (hearing your parents’ voice in your mind, telling you not to do something, while in fact you are doing nothing wrong). The weather gets to us (I always say, when the sun comes out, people don’t need a coach that much). The economy gets to us (an economic recession often results in a psychological depression). Our culture influences us (which becomes noticeable when you start living in a totally different country). Life influences us (situations we are in and things that happen to us). And, of course, other people touch us. On TV, radio, twitter, in social networks and in real life.

Some influences are visible and explicit. If someone treats you rudely, it’s obvious to what you react. They way you react is, of course, again heavily influenced by forces in your Inner World or in your Outer World.

Many influences are not so visible and explicit. To these influence, we react without being aware of what influenced us and why we are reacting the way we do. A lot of our feelings, thoughts and reactions is triggered on “automatic pilot”, which is good. If we would have to figure out all of our thoughts, feelings and actions, we wouldn’t be able nor have the time to live life properly

However, if our thoughts, feelings and actions start bothering us, it is important to find out for which influences we are vulnerable. What influences get through “our shield of self protection” and give us emotions, feelings and (re)actions we don’t wish to have? Why do we sometimes act in ways we don’t want? “I promised myself not to get upset over irrelevant things, and here I go again”, or “I said to myself, let go off all the worrying, but it’s not working” or “I told myself to stay relaxed, but-again- the whole situation made me nervous.”

TUS offers coaching and e-courses to teach you what your vulnerabilities are and how you can become more resilient. If you would like more information on the method TUS uses, called the ABL method®, contact TUS.
